Giveaway Round #2: Gimme your best shot! (CONTEST FOR www.yugatech.com)
Thursday, February 4, 2010Round #2 of the YugaTech Great Gadget Giveway — Gimme your best shot!
This is your chance to get that MSI Wind U123H, the 10-inch netbook with built-in 3G powered by Globe Tattoo.
So what do you need to do? Simple.
Go to the most crowded place and have your picture taken holding the sign “Follow @abeolandres and @talk2globe on Twitter! “.

I’m looking for the best shot — the most creative, most difficult, most crowded that will draw the biggest impact.
Upload your submission on Flickr, PixLink, Picasa, Facebook, or any of your favorite photo-sharing site. I suggest to name your photos as “yugatechcontest.jpg” before uploading and/or include a tag “yugatech contest” when applicable. You can even put it on your blog and write about the ordeal of getting that difficult shot.
You can download this PDF document and print it out to use as props. You can make your own sign too — print it, paint it, put it on a tarp, cartolina, or manila paper — be creative, sky’s the limit. (Hint: We might give special prizes to the most creative ones.)
Once you’re done, leave a comment here with the link to your entry/page.
What we’re giving away?
MSI Wind U123H — for the most difficult, most creative that draws the biggest crowd attention or impact. I’ll pick 5 finalists and ask a panel of judges (TBA) to win the top prize. The runners-up get a Globe Tattoo.
If you posted your entry on Facebook and get as many people to “Like” the photo, you win 5 Globe Tattoo and five Php500 Globe Load. That’s top 10 with the most “Likes”.
If you posted your entry on PixLink, we’ll randomly pick 5 entries to win a Globe Tattoo each.
If you blogged about your entry and linked back to this contest page, we’ll also pick 10 entries randomly to win five Globe Tattoo and five Php500 Globe call card.
I’ll be running a Google Image Search and pick 5 random images on the front page of the search results and give them a prize as well (Php500 Globe call card each). That’s the reason why I mentioned using the file name and/or tag above

That’s 34 minor prizes and 1 grand prize so far. But wait, there’s more!
If you tweet about this contest, we’ll pick 10 winners to get 5 Globe Tattoo and five Php500 Globe call card. Just copy and paste this tweet message:
Win an MSI Wind 3G netbook! Follow @abeolandres & @talk2globe. Join the YugaTech Giveaway: http://bit.ly/cWBn3M #thanks2globe
If you’re not on Twitter but have a blog, just post a blog entry about this photo contest. Make sure to have a live link to this page and use the first picture above (this one).
I’ll pick another set of 10 winners to get 5 Globe Tattoo and five Php500 Globe call card.
Okay, that should be enough, whew! We have fifty-four (54) consolation prizes and one (1) major prize — an MSI Wind U123H 3G netbook that comes with a Globe Tattoo SIM card.
Some things to remember!
You can join in any or all of the giveaways above but you can only win once. If you plan to submit multiple entries, you need to submit different photos/scenarios for it to be counted. That’s it! The fewer the rules, the better.
Contest starts today, February 3, and ends February 26. Three (3) weeks should be enough for you to think of that awesome photo entry. Good luck to all!

Samsung S8000 Jet :TouchWiz user interface but with a twist

Samsung S8000 Jet preview: First look
TouchWiz user interface but with a twist
The Samsung S8000 comes with the latest implementation of the TouchWiz user interface, which is basically a pimped up version of what you saw on the Samsung S8300 UltraTOUCH. However here it performs quite better as obviously the hardware has been updated.
The handset has four different homescreens which you can fill up with widgets of your choice. In case you need a refresh, the widgets basically are handy mini-applications for customizing your handset.
Some of the widgets are more practical such as the calendar or the world clock, image gallery and the mp3/radio player, while others are just pointless but fun.

The TouchWiz UI has been spiced up a little for the S8000 JetThe transition effects are the biggest change to take place on the S8000 Jet in comparison to the previous TouchWiz handsets. You now get to pick between three different sets of transition styles all of which are smooth and cool-looking. They give so much life to the user interface and we almost never saw them lag (the rare exception is the photo contacts app which seems to take about half a second to open) - a commendable achievement.

The fourth handset of the Black Label Series boasts a distinctive 4.0-inch wide screen high-definition LCD with an 800 by 345 pixel resolution for a superb viewing quality. The wide screen breaks away from conventional screen designs with a 21:9 aspect ratio for a panoramic, cinema-like quality and optimal mobile computing experience.
With the enlarged screen, users will experience a surprisingly convenient and efficient mobile environment. Browsing the Internet is made incredibly easy because with 800 pixels at one’s disposal, there is no need to scroll horizontally to read entire web pages. The 4.0-inch display also features a Dual Screen UI that can efficiently display two different types of content simultaneously.
The wide HD LCD “Real VGA” screen provides a full range of natural colors for displayed images, making photos more crisp, videos more true-to-life, games more dynamic and documents more readable.
“The initial response to the new LG Chocolate phone has exceeded our expectations by a wide margin,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications. “Although much interest seems focused on the striking shape of the handset, the real surprise will be when people discover the advantages of the 4.0-inch screen in terms of viewing pleasure and ease of use.”
The new LG Chocolate’s wide screen is overlaid with curved tempered glass and is seamlessly encased in a glossy black finish and iconic red highlights. Although the screen may be much wider, the new LG Chocolate makes an incredibly slim and chic style statement that was also inherent in the original Chocolate.
The new LG Chocolate will be available beginning Q3 in 54 countries.

LG Arena…My next Phone! Yehey
LG’s newest flagship smartphone, the LG Arena, packs in a ton of features you seldom see in its category and price point. We took the new phone for a spin in the last two weeks to see what’s the catch. Check out the review after the jump.
Design and Construction
The LG Arena’s design looks really simple in the outset, not too slim and not too thick either at 12mm (although it’s actually thinner than the iPhone 3G). The faceplate is surrounded in metal with a brushed finish while the backplate is covered in aluminum and plastic. It feels light and fits very well in the hands too.
There are very few physical buttons here — a power button, a camera switch and volume controls — and it gives you an impression that everything else is controlled via the touchscreen.
Navigation and Touch UI
The touch UI of the LG Arena allows for multi-touch, a feature very few touchscreen phones support; and since it has a capacitive screen, the Arena no longer needs a stylus and it’s all finger-flicking from hereon. LG also added a haptic feedback mechanism which you can completely control — vibration volume, touch sound and vibration type.
The S-Class Touch UI gives the screen a 3D effect with an eye-catching Cube navigation that rotates around in 4 panels (Contacts, Widgets, Music and Shortcuts). The Home Screen is packed with all icons for all sorts of controls for Communication, Multimedia, Utilities and Settings (reminded me of the iPhone home screen) — it even re-orients horizontally in landscape mode.
Text input is done via a virtual alphanumeric keypad at the vertical position and switches to full qwerty in horizontal position (landscape mode). While the full qwerty is large enough and easy to get used to, there seems to be some response lag once you start typing real fast. Typing is pretty accurate with a miss-rate of about 2 characters for every 5 words.
Connectivity
LG didn’t hold back to complete the connectivity features in the KM900 — WiFi 802.11 b/g, 3G (HSDPA up to 7.2Mbps), Bluetooth 2.0, GPS with AGPS support — you won’t look for anything more than that on a mobile phone.
What I found bit lacking though is WAP 2.0/xHTML browser which is a little slow even on WiFi although it has some nice features like tabbed browsing and multi-touch navigation (pinch, stretch, swipe etc). Since the Arena can multi-task, you can run several applications and load multiple websites all at the same time. Of course, there are some noticeable slowing down of apps and functions when running them all at the same time.
Multimedia and Entertainment
The LG Arena has a large 3-inch screen with a resolution of 480×800 pixels in bright and crisp 16M colors. This is evident when playing videos where even at an angle, the display still projects the same video quality (no bluish haze like in the iPhone).
The music player is fast and easy to use with some pretty nice visualization. Although I found the volume not too loud, applying the Dolby Mobile in the equalizer made some nice improvements on music playback (at full volume, songs are less pitchy and has a little bit more bass).
Another rare feature of the LG Arena is the FM Tuner with Transmitter so you can broadcast music from the phone to any FM receiver at home or in your car’s stereo (last time I used this feature was with the Nokia N78).
The 5-megapixel camera takes nice quality photos (Schneider-Kreuznach optics) with a fairly fast and stable autofocus. See sample photo below:

TWEET FOR MONEY!
With the continuous growth of Twitter worldwide, I thought it’s only a matter of time before someone does a Pay Per Post marketplace. So there you go — Pay Per Tweet — make some money online by tweeting.
Though the site is not yet open for registration and details aren’t posted yet, it’s pretty easy to imagine what this new marketplace will be:
1) Advertisers buy tweets by the thousands (CPM model) — say $200 per 1,000 tweets.
2) Pay Per Tweet (PPT) auctions the tweet ads and each tweet costs $0.10 (50-50 share).
The model is similar to Pay Per Post — someone buys a post; someone publishes it and earn a couple of bucks.
Question is — will it be just plain per-tweet or will PPT also consider the number of followers a twitterer has? We’re already seeing lots of masked affiliate links on the Twitter stream. I’m pretty sure this PPT will eventually open the floodgates for more ProTwitterers.

EMO Poem: Slowly Fading
Friday, August 14, 2009
The light slowly fading,
i saw that familiar pudd
le,
so dark and black,
i looked back to my wrists,
saw that smooth cut,
so fine under the blanket of blood.
i see this everyday,
each time looking so new,
i never seem to know why though,
that little trickle of blood,
letting it fall in that puddle,
turning so dark inside.
when i am done i clean the puddle,
the rag covered in red,
i grab my arm bands,
slip them over the fresh slashes,
pull my sleeves down around them,
throw the towel in the was and leave.
